BLACVOICE DESIGN STUDIO
Blacvoice Design is a multi-layered design studio and image-making practice specializing in creating books, identities, illustrations, print collateral, publications, short animations and videos, and designs for the screen and digital platforms. Blacvoice Design provides design services for educational institutions, non-profit organizations, and small businesses.
Tasheka Arceneaux Sutton is a designer, educator, image-maker, type enthusiast, and writer. Tasheka is an Associate Professor of Design at the University of Texas at Austin and faculty in the MFA program in Graphic Design at Vermont College of Fine Arts. Tasheka has previously taught graphic design at North Carolina State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, and Loyola Marymount University.
Illustration and typography are significant in Tasheka's work, especially deconstructing letterforms, hand lettering, and typesetting. Typography is an area of design she is most passionate about outside of designing books. She is also interested in synthesizing analog and digital processes, especially making the tools she uses to create images nuanced and obscured.
Tasheka's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Her work was featured in Idea magazine and highlighted in Eye magazine.
Research
Tasheka’s research focuses on discovering Black people omitted from the graphic design history canon. She’s interested in the visual representation of Black people in the media and popular culture, primarily through the lens of stereotypes. Her essay, “A Black Renaissance Woman: Louise E. Jefferson,” is in Baseline Shift: Untold Stories of Women in Graphic Design History. Her review of Race by Design: How Visual Culture Shapes America appeared in Design in Culture. Her essay, “The Type Behind the Name,” in the forthcoming book Documenting the Nameplate, describes the design and history of the stylistic styles of the typography used in most nameplate designs. She is the co-author of Black Design in America: African Americans and the African Diaspora in Graphic Design 19th-21st Century, which will be released in 2024.
Tasheka holds an MFA in Graphic Design from California College of the Arts and a BA in English Writing from Loyola University New Orleans.
